Natural Treatments That Might Work for Your Migraine Headache

For those of us who suffer from frequent migraine headaches, you may be as interested in finding a way to relieve the pain as you are in finding a way to prevent the headaches from occurring in the first place. Sure, there are many over the counter medications out there today that are designed to treat migraine headaches, but you should know that if you rely on them for any length of time, you could develop other health problems, such as stomach ulcers.

That being said, there are also many natural, herbal medicines that can be purchased for the treatment of migraine headaches as well. These are not as popular as other medications, but can be just as effective, if not more so, than many of the common OTC remedies. More and more people are tuning into holistic medicine, so this may change in the near future.

The bad thing about herbal medicines is that there really hasn’t been a lot of scientific research done on their effectiveness, or more importantly, their safety. Many herbal medicines are claimed to be more effective with fewer side effects than many of the more common OTC and prescription medications, but there is currently no scientific evidence that supports those claims.

Some herbs have been studied, and some have been found to aid in circulation, meaning allowing blood vessels to expand, so that more blood can get to the brain and vital organs. In some cases, this alone might be enough to relieve some of your migraine headache pain.

One common herbal medicine that is used to treat migraine headaches is chamomile. This herb has not only been effective at treating many different types of headaches, including migraine headaches, but it can also help calm the emotions, which often lead to migraine headaches in the first place.

Ginkgo Biloba, which is known to enhance blood flow to the brain, may also, be used to help relieve migraine headache pain. In some cases, the extra blood flow to the brain may be all that is needed to make the headache go away.

Another herbal remedy that seems to work well for migraine headache sufferers is Gotu Kola, which not only provides extra blood flow to the vital organs, but also acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help ease the pain as well.

Remember, that herbal medicines can often interact with prescription medications, so make certain you talk to your doctor before doing your own tests. It is also a good idea to do your homework, so that you know what side effects each herb may cause, that way you can make a more educated decision about adding it to your migraine headache medicine routine!
