A Few Facts about Migraine Headaches

When someone is in the middle of a migraine headache, or gets one for the very first time, they often describe the pain as being the worst type of pain they have ever felt before, even more so than childbirth! Some people say that they feel as though their head is going to burst open at any minute, others say they feel like their eyes are going to pop out from the pressure caused by the migraine headache. If you have never experienced a migraine headache, you should truly consider yourself lucky!

The bad thing for migraine headache sufferers is that very few people really realize what it means to have a migraine headache, except for those who have had to deal with them themselves. Some people suffer from migraine headaches on a daily basis, meaning that they are unable to work, clean their house, shop, etc. People on the outside often think that people use migraine headaches as an excuse to get out of doing undesirable tasks, or to get attention, and while that may be true in some instances; you shouldn’t think that is the case with everyone. Some doctors, especially those working in emergency rooms, are quick to think that people who come in complaining with a migraine headache are only looking for pain killers so they can get high, which is also, an unfair assumption. Many people lose their jobs each year due to being absent with migraine headaches, and some of those will eventually go on to be on permanent disability, because they can’t hold down a job. For sure, migraine headaches are something that should be taken seriously, but unfortunately, are not by most people.

Migraine headaches are often triggered by many different causes, and create different symptoms from person to person. There really is no way to know what symptoms will come with a migraine headache, as they can vary so greatly. Most people describe unbearable throbbing or pulsing pain, and gauge their pain as often being unbearable. Just like migraine symptoms, we all tolerate pain differently, so what might be unbearable to me, might be only mildly uncomfortable to you. Many people feel so drained that after their migraine headache is gone they don’t even have the energy to get out of bed, or focus on day to day tasks, such as driving, cooking, etc.

Some people who have migraine headaches report that along with the pain they throw up, or are nauseous, that their pain is worsened by bright lights, or loud noises and that even the slightest movement makes their pain worse. In some cases, migraine headaches become so severe that all the patient is able to do is lie flat in a dark, quiet room and pray that the pain goes away. This type of pain can soon impact you emotionally, as well as physically.

Another bad thing about migraine headaches is that in some cases, physicians are unable to find a prescription medication that can eliminate or relieve the symptoms, meaning that there is basically nothing they can do for the patient. Some people find that the only way they are able to handle the pain that is caused by their migraine headaches is to sleep it off, others find that their pain is so sever that they are unable to sleep.

Sadly, the many people in the world today who have to deal with migraine headaches often get no sympathy or understanding from their family, friends, or coworkers. People are so quick to think the worst that they overlook the pain that that person is actually in, which can only lead to more emotional scars.

If you know someone who suffers from migraine headaches, please remember not to overlook their pain, and know that in all likelihood, they are not faking their condition.
