Tried And True Migraine Treatments

Migraine headaches are definitely no fun, and for many people, who suffer from them, are debilitating when they occur. During a migraine attack, sufferers may not be able to do anything more than camp out on the sofa or in bed until it subsides, meaning that they can’t work, can’t care for their families, etc. If you suffer from migraine headaches, you should really seek medical treatment, but there are some tried and true home treatment methods that may work for you in the meantime.

One cause of migraine headaches may be not getting adequate sleep, so to counter this, try to alter your schedule to get more shut-eye, if possible. The best thing to do is develop a regular sleep routine, go to bed as close to the same time every night as you can, and get up at the same time every morning. Even if you have to miss your favorite late-night television show, this will be a change well worth it.

When you do feel that migraine headache coming on, try to go somewhere quiet where you can lie down. Use a cold compress to help minimize pain as well.

While some people say that caffeine actually can cause migraine headaches to occur, some studies indicate that drinking or taking caffeine during a migraine headache can actually help. Drink some coffee or a soda, or if you don’t want to do that, try an over the counter migraine remedy that contains caffeine.

Depending on the type of migraine headaches you experience, light may worsen your symptoms, so try to find a dark place that you can rest in until the headache subsides. If nothing else, carry sunglasses or a mask in your purse at all times, which will help block out light if you are away from home when the migraine headache occurs.

Other studies indicate that some migraine headaches can be triggered by missing a meal, or not getting the right nutrition. Make certain that if you don’t have time to sit down to a full meal during the day, you at least snack frequently, so that your body doesn’t notice the absence of that missing meal.

You may also want to keep a food journal, as some migraine headaches are caused by the foods that we eat. Write down everything you put into your mouth, and when a migraine headache occurs, make note of it, so that you can look at what you ate and try to narrow down the culprit.

Riboflavin has also been shown effective in preventing migraine headaches, so talk to your doctor about adding a supplement to your daily medication routine. Typically, 400mg is the recommended dose, but make certain you follow the suggestions made by your physician.
