Headache remedies

Some people are lucky and go through there lives almost never getting headaches. Other people, like me, are stricken with throbbing blinding headaches once a week or more. As they can be completely debilitating, finding effective headache remedies has become something a pastime and obsession of mine. Even mild headaches can really make simple chores seem like major projects. Because headaches are such a frequent occurrence in people, there are many headache remedies out there to try.

In my own search the one thing I’ve learned above everything else is that everyone is different. Since headaches have so many possible causes, headache remedies vary considerably. If you can find the root cause behind your headaches you’ll be able to narrow your search for headache remedies down a lot. For instance, if you are suffering from headaches due to some kind of muscular strain in your back, shoulder, or neck, you can avoid activities that inflame these areas, and look into therapies that may help you recover. Likewise, if you are getting frequent sinus headaches, you may have allergies and some allergy medications may serve as effective headache remedies.

Of course, if you’re like me, you have no idea why you get headaches. Migraines can come on for any number of thousands of reasons, and if you are prone to these types of headaches they can sometimes be impossible to completely avoid. Drinking plenty of fluids, getting consistent regular sleep, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and getting regular exercise are all activities that supposedly reduce migraines. I do all of these things as best as I can, and it helps a lot, but I still sometimes get stricken with blinding headaches. Headache remedies for these kind of spontaneous no reason migraines are pretty much limited to painkillers.

Finding a good analgesic has also been an obsession of mine. In my search I’ve concluded that hands down Excedrin is the best headache remedy most of the time. Unfortunately, Excedrin has one little catch; using it regularly will actually give you headaches. Ironic, isn’t it? A headache remedy that produces headaches? The reason why is because it has caffeine in it, and unlike caffeinated beverages, the caffeine in pills tends to hit you all at once. Caffeine withdrawal is chiefly characterized by one symptom; headache. So, if you find yourself taking Excedrin regularly, you may find yourself with a horrible headache the day you decide to stop taking it.

For this reason, I use Excedrin or any other painkiller with caffeine only as a last resort. Aspirin, Advil, and Tylenol are also at least fairly effective headache remedies.
